A nine-year-old boy has died after drowning at a hotel swimming pool in St Louis, Missouri.

The boy was swimming in the pool at the Pear Tree Inn by Drury with his twin brother, whose condition is not known.

Both boys were pulled from the water and guests tried to revive them. They were rushed to hospital when paramedics arrived.

According to Fox2, police are treating the incident on Saturday afternoon as an accidental drowning.

In a statement from the Drury Hotel Chain, division director David Ziegler said: "We are aware of this tragic situation. We are working with police and medical personnel to find out the specifics of what happened. Our condolences go out to the family, friends and loved ones of those involved."

Hotel guest Kevin Shelton told St. Louis Post-Dispatch he heard screams for help from the pool area as he was checking in.

Shelton ran to the pool area when someone asked if anyone knew CPR. He began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on one of the boys, while a hotel worker tried to save the other.

The swimming pool is adjacent to the hotel lobby and has a depth of four to five feet.
