Get your brolly ready! Typical British weather returns for rest of August

The heatwave in Britain is officially over as forecasters have predicted the return of typically British weather for the rest of August.

Temperatures are expected to remain higher than average but won't reach the height of the heatwave in July.

Charlie Powell of the Met Office told the Daily Telegraph that for the rest of August and into September there is likely to be a North-South divide, with warmer temperatures in the South and rain and cooler weather in the North.

Meanwhile, Laura Young at the Met Office adds the unsettled weather is normal for August.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, she said: "It is traditionally the wettest summer month."

Young said: "Don't put away the brollies – enjoy the sunny weather when it comes. For the next couple of weeks at least, it looks like the hottest and driest weather is behind us."

Forecaster Leon Brown at The Weather Channel tells AOL Travel: "On Saturday some light rain will spread to the South West during the day, mainly the south coast of Wales to Cornwall and Devon, and in the North West a band of showers will spread to western Scotland and Ireland.

"The rest of the UK will be partly to mostly cloudy, but generally dry with temperatures 20 to 21C over the Midland to East Anglia and SE England, 17 to 19C in the west and a cooler 14 to 15C in NW Scotland.

"Showery rain will move eastwards overnight on Saturday, but the South and South East may start Sunday cloudy and damp. A much better afternoon for England and Wales with isolated showers and some nice sunshine too lifting temperatures to 20C in the Midlands and 21 to 22C in the South and South East.

Leon says it will be "quite a bit fresher and breezy too over the North with some heavy showers from North West England to western Scotland and Northern Ireland. Temperatures here in the 13 to 15C range and a few degrees below normal."

For next week, we can expect a cool start everywhere with temperatures two or three degrees below normal and a few showers. It will become cloudy, damp and breezy by mid-week with rain in the North but hardly any rain in the south. Temperatures are expected to pick up a few degrees but feel more humid.

Mr Brown adds: "The weather will remain changeable through the rest of next week with temperatures near, and at times, slightly below normal. There is a sign that we may see two or three days of warmth around the 20th to 21st with temperatures back up to the mid or higher 20s in southern Britain.

"This warmth is more of a transient spell and won't last long, probably ending fairly abruptly with some heavy downpours and thunderstorms. We'll see a more unsettled and cooler end to the month then following in a westerly flow from the Atlantic."
