A man has died after falling at a castle in Northumberland.

The 50-year-old worker at Warkworth Castle and Hermitage reportedly fell in the castle's keep (fortified tower) on Tuesday morning.

Chronicle Live reports that the man was airlifted to Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment but police confirmed his death on Wednesday morning.

The English Heritage site was closed to the public on Wednesday.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson told The Northern Echo: "The injured man has now died and a report is being prepared for the coroner."

Speaking to the BBC, an English Heritage spokeswoman said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm the death of a member of staff at Warkworth Castle.

"He was highly regarded by all his friends and colleagues here and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family at this time."
