Plane crash lands between two apartment blocks near Chicago
A quick-thinking pilot crash landed a small aircraft between two apartment buildings near Chicago Executive Airport in the Chicago suburb of Wheeling, Illinois when he experienced trouble with the plane on Tuesday evening. Scroll down for video.
Airport officials said the pilot had reported a problem to the tower moments before the crash which took place half a mile from the airport.
According to CBS Local, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the pilot was injured, although Wheeling Police indicated there were no reports of serious injuries.
Airport manager Dennis Rouleau told the Daily Herald that the Beechcraft Super King Air 200 was approaching the airport from the north at about 8.30pm when it crashed.
"To develop a problem and then put it down on the road instead - it could have been a lot worse," Rouleau said.
"It could have been in some buildings, but he was able to put it down on the street to avoid injuries to himself and people on the ground."
He added: "There was a fair amount of damage, but for what he did, the airplane was pretty intact for landing short of the runway.
"He did a spectacular job of avoiding homes and cars."
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
