Budget airline Ryanair has stunned passengers at Mallorca's airport by charging an extra eight euros (£6.80) for carrying traditional Mallorcan pastry ensaimada, which exceeds their maximum hand luggage requirements.

According to EuroWeeklyNews, the cake, which is packaged in a hexagonal box and is a popular souvenir for tourists to bring home from the Balearic island, sells the highest volume in all of Mallorca at the airport. Tourists reportedly consume around 60 per cent of the locally produced cakes.

But Ryanair has angered travellers by forcing them to transport the cakes inside their luggage, eat them before they board the plane or pay the excess fee.

SeeMallorca reports that the pastry does not conform to the airline's hand baggage policy which states: "Strictly one item of cabin baggage per passenger (excluding infants) weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm is permitted."

The charges are likely to have an effect on ensaimada producers too, who rely on tourists as their main customers.

According to Cargo Forwarder, check-in workers at Palma airport are reportedly suggesting that travellers roll the cakes up or fold them to stow in their handbags and backpacks.

The new charges could mean many tourists avoid buying the sweet treats to take home.
