Video: Hotel manager's Basil Fawlty-style attack on waiter

Updated:

The moment a hotel manager lost his temper and carried out a 'Basil Fawlty' style attack on a former employee has been caught on camera.

Robert Hardman, 54, who runs the three-star Plough Hotel in Northampton, flew off the handle when former employee, Sorin Paraschiv, came back to the hotel to claim £800 he says he was owed in past wages.

Hardman can be seen pushing Sorin under the front desk and slapping him around the head.

Another member of staff runs in to try and stop the attack, when Hardman grabs Sorin by the shirt collar and drags him out of the front doors.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the footage was released after Hardman pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm at Northampton Crown Court on Monday.

He was spared jail, receiving a seven-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months.

He was also ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work, pay £1,750 in compensation to the victim, £250 costs and a £100 fine.

The Daily Mail reports that Judge Rupert Mayo told Hardman: "The footage shows you lost it.

"It may well have been somebody who you did not think deserved to take the money but you are a manager of a medium sized hotel and it was humiliating for him. This is not the way for an employer to behave."

According to the Mirror, a worker at The Plough Hotel said: "Hardman is a likeable man and can be very funny but when he feels like he has been taken advantage of he can lose it.

"We joke that he is the real life Basil Fawlty because he can get angry with people especially guests, but I've never known him to be violent.

"I think he just saw the red mist and went mad."
