A teenage girl is suing United Airlines as she claims flight attendants did nothing to stop a fellow passenger from "masturbating and exposing his penis" on a plane.

The Huffington Post reports that Monica Amestoy, 18, said she flew from New York to Los Angeles in October 2012 and noticed a man sitting across the aisle from her performing the lewd act.

Amestoy, from California, claims she complained to cabin crew but they did not speak to the passenger nor did they offer to move her as there were no other seats available in her class, ABC Local reports.

According to CBS Los Angeles, the man used a blanket to hide pleasuring himself from other passengers on the six-hour flight.

"I was terrified and disgusted throughout the flight and kept hoping that the man would stop. But he did not. Except for brief moments when the flight attendant was standing next to him in the immediate vicinity," she told CBS Los Angeles.

Amestoy said she complained twice to the flight attendant but was told there was nothing they could do. The crew reportedly let the man leave and did not notify police.

Monica's mother Margaret said she was "so angry" after "I trusted United with one of my children".

Amestoy is suing United Airlines for negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and false imprisonment.

Her father reported the incident to police and the masturbator pleaded guilty, The Huffington Post reports.

United Airlines apologised to the teenager and in a statement said: "The comfort and security of our customers is our top priority, and we will closely review this complaint when we receive it."
