Mystery as mother and daughter die in stabbing at Premier Inn in Scotland

Mystery is surrounding the deaths of a mother and daughter who have both died after suffering knife wounds while staying at the Premier Inn in Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland.

Margaret McDonough, 52, was found injured in her room at the budget hotel on Friday and was rushed to Inverclyde Royal Hospital in Greenock, where she died later that day.

Nicola McDonough, 23, was found slumped unconscious in the corridor and was taken to hospital, but died from her injuries on Monday night.

Police are not looking for a third party in connection with their deaths at this time.

The pair, from Paisley, checked into the Premier Inn in Greenock at 3pm on Thursday. They left a little while later and returned to the hotel between 12.30am and 1am. They were both found severely injured in the hotel at about 7am on Friday, reports the BBC.

According to the Metro, family members are said to be 'totally baffled' by what happened.

John McDonough, the brother of Margaret's ex-husband, told The Sun: "We're completely at a loss. Nobody knows a thing. Not got a clue.

"I don't know why they would be down in Greenock. We just haven't a clue; we're waiting to find out."

Police Scotland's Inspector David Wagstaff told the Daily Record: "We are still piecing together the last known movements of Margaret and Nicola.

"I'd like to make it clear that at present we are keeping an open mind on the circumstances. However, we are not looking for any third party at this time.

"We would also like to speak to anyone who may have seen either woman or their Suzuki Swift, which has the registration number SL56CBF, in the Paisley, Renfrewshire, and Greenock, Inverclyde, area during Thursday, 9 May into Friday, 10 May, to get in touch."

Margaret was a mother of five, as well as being a foster carer. She was also a former Lib Dem council candidate.

Nicola graduated from the University of the West of Scotland with a degree in social work last month, and had been working at a charity before she died.

Her father, and Margaret's ex-husband, Thomas McDonough, had been keeping a vigil at her bedside.
