Part of 9/11 plane landing gear found in New York
A five-foot-long piece of metal bearing a Boeing label and serial number has been found near the World Trade Center site in New York and is believed to be from one of the planes that crashed into the twin towers in the 9/11 terrorist attack in 2001.
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) released a photo of an apparent part of the landing gear from one of the commercial planes used in the attacks, which is shown sitting between two buildings in lower Manhattan.
Police confirmed on 26 April that the chunk of metal was found lodged in an extremely narrow alley between 50 Murray Street and the back of 51 Park Place, just three blocks from ground zero.
NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said the twisted metal part has cables and levers on it, and includes a clearly visible Boeing Co. identification number.
"The odds of this being wedged between there is amazing," Browne said.
He added that other World Trade Center wreckage had been discovered nearby in past years.
According to the BBC, police are keeping the area off-limits until a health assessment has been made. Investigators will also search the area for possible human remains.
