Bus driver dies after being trapped under own coach

A bus driver has been killed after becoming trapped under his own coach while out on a day trip in Devon.

The 50-year-old man from Newton Abbot became stuck underneath the coach at the Famous Lee Mill Shopping outlet, near, Ivybridge, after a driving a group of tourists there.

The bus was owned by Abbot Coach Travel, based in Newton Abbot, and was carrying people on a day trip from Paignton.

Police, ambulance crew, a doctor, and a policeman reportedly all helped to try and free the man before firefighters arrived with a heavy rescue vehicle.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall police told This Is Plymouth: "At just before 5pm yesterday (Thursday, 18 April) a single vehicle collision occurred in the car park of the Famous Lee Mill, Lee Mill Bridge, Ivybridge.

"The vehicle was a coach carrying passengers on a day excursion from Paignton. The driver had exited the coach which then rolled forward into a hedge trapping him underneath.

"The driver, a 50-year-old man from Newton Abbot received serious injuries and died at Derriford hospital shortly after arrival."

He added that passengers from the bus were looked after by Lee Mill staff.

The Ministry of Transport and the police are now investigating the incident, which is being considered as an accident at work.
