Plane misses runway at Bali airport and lands in sea, passengers survive

Passengers on a Lion Air flight miraculously survived a plane crash at an airport in Bali when the Boeing jet missed the runway as it came to land and ended up in the sea.

More than 100 passengers survived the incident on Saturday.

Transport minister of the Indonesian holiday island, Herry Bhakti, told AFP there were good weather conditions at Denpasar airport, where the plane was supposed to land.

An image from a TV One report shows the plane partially submerged in the water with a large crack towards the rear of the aircraft. Passengers wearing life jackets can be seen in the water.

A shaking passenger named Dewi told AFP: "The plane was about to land when suddenly it fell into the sea. People on board panicked and began screaming."

Several passengers were taken to Denpasar hospital with injuries.

A spokesman for low-cost airline Lion Air said the 737-800 was carrying 101 passengers and seven crew members.

Bhakti said the cause of the incident will be investigated by the national transportation safety committee.
