A man has died after a diving accident in Scotland's Western Isles.

Emergency services were called to Bosta beach at Great Bernera in Lewis at 17.30 on Sunday, the BBC reports.

Iain Macleod was airlifted to Western Isles Hospital by coastguard helicopter but despite efforts of hospital staff to save the diver, he was later pronounced dead.

STV reports that Macleod, who lived on Great Bernera, got into trouble while diving underwater in the north of Great Bernera off the west coast of Lewis.

The accident happened in the Kyles of Bernera, a strait of sea between the islands of Great Bernera and uninhabited Little Bernera, close to Bosta beach, a popular tourist spot.

A police spokesman told STV: "A 44-year-old male was airlifted to Western Isles Hospital by coastguard helicopter. Despite efforts by hospital staff the male was later pronounced deceased.

One islander said: "It is a terrible tragedy. Iain was a nice guy. He was popular with people in the community. Like everyone else brought up in Bernera he was around the sea and boats all his life."
