A four-year-old boy nearly drowned in a swimming pool on a Disney cruise on Saturday afternoon.

The boy was discovered at about 3.30pm on the Disney Fantasy cruise ship, spokeswoman Rena Langley for the cruise line said.

The Daily Mail reports that he was airlifted to hospital.

The ship was docked at Port Canaveral at the time of the near drowning. Staff gave the boy medical attention before he was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Florida.

Disney told Fox Orlando their "thoughts are with the family and they're working to assist them at this time."

Disney Fantasy left the port 45 minutes after the incident and continued the cruise.

The news comes just weeks after a 13-year-old boy died after drowning in a Disney resort swimming pool in Orlando.

Anthony Johnson was swimming with his family at Disney's Pop Century Resort when they lost sight of him and his cousin soon spotted him at the bottom of the pool. The boy was taken to hospital but later died.
