British snowboarder dies in 16ft crevasse fall in Chamonix

A British man has died after falling five metres into a crevasse while snowboarding in the Grands Montets ski area in Chamonix.

The 38-year-old, who is believed to have lived 10 miles from the resort in Passy, was snowboarding over a snow bridge on the Rognon glacier when it collapsed under his weight.

According to chamonet.net, shortly after 2pm on 28 March, a skier spotted the man at the bottom of the crevasse and alerted emergency services.

A helicopter was scrambled to the scene, and two men were winched down to the man. But he was pronounced dead upon their arrival.

The man had been snowboarding alone, but had been due to meet friends later.

A police spokesman told the Daily Mail: "When we arrived the victim was already dead. He probably died instantly from the fall."

The news comes just weeks after father and son, Peter Saunders, 48, and Charlie, 12, died after falling 1,000ft down a gully while hiking in Chamonix.
