A man got more than he bargained for when he went shark diving for the first time in South Africa and a great white got inside the cage.

Bryan Plummer went shark diving with a group of friends off the coast of Gansbaai on Thursday and was attacked by a great white shark which ignored the strategically placed bait and headed straight for the human food in the cage.

YouTube user Bryan uploaded the video to show the full horror of the attack where the shark managed to get its head of sharp teeth in the diving cage.

The Daily Mail reports that the man closest to the animal's face managed to swim under its maw. The diver, known as Roger, had got married just the day before.

The shark managed to get its head stuck inside the bars of the safety cage and thrashed around in the water.

The Herald Sun reports that Bryan apologised for any profanities on the film and said the attack was an "out of control situation".

Luckily for the pair inside the cage, the shark got away without their flesh in its jaws.
