British couple on round-the-world cycling trip killed on road in Thailand
A British couple on a round-the-world cycling trip have been killed by a pick-up truck in Thailand.
Peter Root and Mary Thompson, both 34, were riding their bikes on a road 113km (70 miles) east of Bangkok in the Phanom Sarakham district when they were run over.
The couple were both talented artists and had met at art college in Falmouth, Cornwall, 14 years ago.
They were cycling through their 23rd country when the accident happened, and had pedalled through China, Europe and the Middle East, even making it through danger hotspots like Iran and Afghanistan.
The pair, who lived in Guernsey, set off on their adventure in July 2011, and kept everyone up to date with their travels on their website Two On Four Wheels.
Mr Root's father, Jerry, said they were a "golden couple" who "loved life".
He told the Metro: "We don't yet know exactly what has happened."
According to the Daily Telegraph, a Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are aware of the deaths of two British nationals in Thailand on 13 February and we are providing consular assistance."
Thailand is well known for its perilous roads with more than 13,000 people killed and almost one million injured each year in accidents.
