Video: Skateboarder sets off speed camera at 70mph in Cape Town

A thrill-seeking skateboarder is facing prosecution for triggering a speed camera as he raced past at a speed of 70mph down a road from Table Mountain to Cape Town, South Africa.

Decio Lourenco, 24, is seen celebrating after the feat in footage recorded by his friend using a camera attached to his car bumper.

But the 'victory' could land the design student in hot water as the city's safety authorities plan to have him prosecuted for endangering motorists.

The stunt took place on 20 January on Kloof Nek Road between Table Mountain and Lion's Head, and Mr Lourenco's speed was tracked by a GPS sensor fitted to his ankle.

Jean-Pierre Smith, Cape Town's safety and security spokesman, said he had put other road users at risk, telling the Daily Telegraph: "All that was needed was for one of those motorists to panic and swerve into the oncoming traffic and you have a large number of deaths, as we have already had on that road."

He said he had asked the Director of Public Prosecutions to charge Mr Lourenco with reckless and negligent road behaviour, adding: "If we don't take action against him, every other aspirant skateboarder will try it and one of them will come to a sticky end."

But Mr Lourenco remains defiant, saying: "I accept that it's dangerous but so is stepping out of my front door. I skate down that road all the time and was skating well within my limitations."
