Shocking footage has emerged of the Turkish Airlines plane that was reportedly struck by lightning last week.

MSNBC reports that the camera footage was taken by a passenger on board the jet and shows sparks from the plane's engine, which caught on fire, and cabin lights flickering on and off.

Despite the plane catching fire mid-air, it made a safe emergency landing and no-one was hurt.

The plane was carrying 114 people and was travelling from Istanbul to Izmir.

Turkish TV reports said the pilot immediately activated the fire extinguishing gear, declared an emergency and landed safely.

But aviation analyst John Nance at ABC News said he doubts the fire was caused by a lightning strike.

'There's almost no likelihood that a lightning strike could have created any problem with the engine,' he said.

'What we saw in the videos certainly looks frightening, but that is basically an engine just coming apart.'
