Dubai plans to build world's biggest underwater hotel

Dubai could soon be home to the world's largest underwater hotel, which is the brainchild of Polish company Deep Ocean Technology.

According to Deep Ocean Technology, the Water Discus Hotel will comprise two central discs - one underwater and one above water. This will allow guests to observe the underwater environment while also making the most of Dubai's hot and sunny weather.

The two parts of the building will be connected by five solid legs and a vertical shaft containing a lift and stairway. The lower disk will be located 10 metres beneath the surface of the sea, and will contain 21 hotel rooms, an underwater dive centre and a bar. The upper disc, located 5-7 metres above the water, will contain a restaurant, spa and recreation area. There will also be rooftop swimming pools and an exotic garden.

The structure is designed to be safe, even in extreme weather conditions. The building is strong enough to survive a tsunami and the upper disk is set high to minimise the risk of flooding. The underwater disc is designed to surface immediately in the event of any danger, and several satellite discs can be detached from the main structure and used as lifeboats in the event of an emergency.

The Daily Mail reports that Bogdan Gutkowski, President of Swiss firm BIG InvestConsult AG, which is backing the venture, said: "Water Discus Hotel project opens many new fields of development for the hotel and tourism sector, housing and city city sector in the coastal off-shore areas, as well as new opportunities for ecology support by creation of new underwater ecosystems and activities on underwater world protection.

"Additionally we would like to create here in the UAE the International Environmental Program and Centre of the Underwater World Protection - with Water Discus Hotel as a laboratory tool for oceans and seas environment protection and research."
