Couple caught kissing on Dubai beach jailed for a year

A couple who were spotted kissing on a beach in Dubai have been jailed for a year - despite the fact the man claimed he was giving her CPR.

The Indian man, 28, said he was trying to resuscitate the Filipino woman - who was his co-worker at a McDonald's restaurant - after she suffered an asthma attack.

According to The National, an Emirati child saw the two together on the Jumeirah Open Beach, and told his mother he had seen a couple 'wrestling'.

The mother then claimed she watched for an hour as the pair kissed on the beach.

According to the Daily Mail, she said: "I was shocked when I spotted them seated in a position that looked like they were making love.

"They were indulged in a very intimate situation, but they were not naked. Immediately I called 999."

After their arrest, The National reports the pair later admitted they had fallen in love whilst working together, and that on 17 December 2012 they had drinks at a hotel in Deira, and then went to the beach at about 9.30pm.

The man admitted the pair had each drunk five glasses of Scotch, but denied kissing.

According to Gulf News, he said: "That was absolutely untrue. We did not kiss. My colleague suffered an asthma attack while we were seated there and I performed CPR on her."

They both denied committing a lewd act in public but admitted to drinking alcohol without a licence.

They were jailed for kissing and fined AED 1000 (£173) for drinking in public, and will both be deported when the jail term ends.

Back in April 2010, a British couple lost their appeal against a similar conviction,
when they were jailed in Dubai for kissing in public.

Ayman Najafi, 24, and Charlotte Adams, 25, were sentenced to a month in prison with subsequent deportation and fined about £200 for drinking alcohol.

According to the BBC, the pair were arrested in November after a local woman accused them of breaking the country's decency laws by kissing on the mouth in a restaurant.
