At least four people have died after a Russian passenger plane crashed into a main road outside a Moscow airport.

The Tupolev-204 overshot the runway when it came into land at Vnukovo Airport, crashing into pieces and catching fire.

The Russian Red Wings Airlines flight number RWZ9268 was carrying between eight and 12 people, according to CNN.

The Mirror reports that the captain and co-pilot are believed to have been killed and a 27-year-old woman is thought to have died on the way to hospital.

The paper added that the official spokesman of the Investigative Committee, Vladimir Markin, told Russia Today that the preliminary cause of the accident is thought to be pilot error.

Images of the scene show the aircraft split into several pieces, with the tail and cockpit broken off, although the fuselage appeared mainly intact.

It is thought the plane was on its second attempt at landing when the crash happened at around 4.35pm local time (12.35GMT).

Fire engines raced to the scene as smoke could be seen rising from the wreckage.

According to the BBC, the plane had arrived in Moscow from the Czech Republic.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has ordered an investigation into the cause of the accident, which is the first fatal plane crash involving a Tupolev-204.
