A group of holidaymakers have been given a refund for their holiday in Mexico after rowdy students urinated off balconies at a Riviera Maya resort.

The Daily Telegraph reports that a Canadian travel agent was forced to pay $30,000 (£18,700) to 19 disgruntled tourists after their dream getaway at a Mexican resort was ruined by drunken spring break students.

Sunwing Vacations was ordered by a judge in Montreal to compensate the holidaymakers for their nightmare stay at the Club Grand Coco Bay hotel, during which students urinated on their balcony and littered the poolside with broken glass.

Sun News reported that resort staff had to shut down the hotel's Jacuzzi due to 'fouled-up' water.

The holidaymakers visited the resort in March 2009, but were soon joined by 'busloads' of students celebrating their annual spring break - traditionally a time of excessive partying and drinking for North American scholars.

'The entire hotel was disrupted by shouts and noise that lasted all night,' read the court's decision. 'Some customers had to deal with students on upper floors who urinated on their balconies.'

One hotel representative admitted that it had 'completely lost control of security', while a nearby beach was also closed because of broken glass.

The situation did not improve, even after six students were removed from the hotel.

Sunwing was asked to reimburse the holidaymakers for their entire trip, including the cost of flights and 'moral damages' of $500 per person.
