A Southwest Airlines jet slid off a runway at Denver International Airport after the plane lost control in its last seconds of landing.

According to the Daily Mail, passengers on board the jet said they were lucky to be alive after the terrifying moment when the plane slid off the snow-covered runway.

Fire fighters and emergency staff rushed to the scene shortly after 5pm on Saturday, with crews heard warning rescue workers over radio waves of an airliner crash.

Communication obtained by KUSA heard: 'This is not a drill. Rescue One this is not a drill. Respond to the air force on an airliner crash.'

Passenger Al Rehmka told the news station of the surprise landing on the grass. He said: 'It had seemed like he was having a hard time getting the plane to slow down.'

'It was going faster than he wanted it to and then the next thing we knew it was making a strange grinding sounds and he veered off to the right and then there was no runaway underneath us,' he added.

Another traveller, Linda Carucci, told KUSA: 'It was just sort of weird because the flight attendant had just said "and we're here seven minutes early make sure you tell all your friends" - boom, boom, bump - and then, it was over. We were off the tarmac.'

There were no injuries reported among the 125 passengers on Flight 1905 arriving from California's Metropolitan Oakland International.

Passengers took to Twitter to post pictures of the scene. One showed a fire fighter walking through the plane's aisles, while in another passengers could be seen exiting the jet.

Denver International Airport spokeswoman Jenny Schiavone said passengers were bussed from the taxiway to the concourse after two hours on the ground.

According to NBCNews.com, KUSA reported that those on the plane were taken to the British Airways lounge.

Ms Schiavone said there were no disruptions to flight schedules and operations following the incident.
