Commuters fainted in horror after a woman lost both hands when she was hit and trapped by a train in Ireland on Monday night.

The appalling accident took place at Dun Laoghaire Dart station, County Dublin, on Monday night at around 8pm.

The woman, believed to be in her early 20s, was hit by the north-bound Greystones to Malahide DART train when she was on the tracks as it pulled into the station.

Rescue crews spent 40 minutes trying to free her after she became trapped under the locomotive.

According to the report in the Irish Independent, she was said to be alive when she left the scene in an ambulance - given a Garda escort en route to St Vincent's Hospital - but had lost both hands in the incident.

The DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) is the rail line running along the coast of Dublin, from Malahide and Howth southwards as far as Greystones, Co Wicklow, and is administered by the national rail operator, Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail).
