British soldier killed in fight in Cyprus nightclub

A British soldier stationed in Cyprus has been stabbed to death in a fight that took place in a nightclub in the resort of Ayia Napa.

BBC News reports that the Ministry of Defence confirmed that a 19-year-old solider from the 2nd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers had died.

Ayia Napa is a popular party resort, which attracts thousands of young holidaymakers. According to the BBC, the MoD had already banned soldiers from the the area where the brawl took place due to previous incidents.

The Daily Mail reports that police spokesperson Georgious Economou confirmed that the soldier died after being knifed during a fight between four off-duty soldiers and three British holidaymakers in a club in the early hours of the morning. One of the tourists is alleged to have pulled out a switchblade and stabbed the soldier during the fight.

Mr Economou said that the soldier was pronounced dead on arrival at Famagusta General Hospital in Paralimni. A knife has been recovered and is undergoing forensic tests. The three detained Britons are expected to appear in court tomorrow.
