A group of four horses brought traffic to a standstill during rush hour on the M25.

The incident caused 20-mile queues and delays of up to 50 minutes between junction 24 near Potters Bar, and junction 26 near Waltham Abbey in Essex.

According to The Sun, police enforced a rolling road block to round up the horses who were trotting along the carriageway.

A host of commuters took to Twitter to share the strange hold-up, and some started competing to see who could come up with the best puns in 'Horsey Headlines', reports the Mirror.

Some of the offerings? Tom Holmes wrote: "Hoofgotta be kiddin' me" and "Horses cause Tailbacks"; The Media Blog came up with: "Call the Hay-A"; and PublicRobA said: "Horse power on M25".
