British diver Gary Hunt was crowned the 2012 champion of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series yesterday, after diving 27.5 metres from a platform built into a cliff in Wadi Shab, Oman.

Mr Hunt was watched by 5,000 spectators as he executed a impressive triple-quad dive, hitting the water below at 85kph.

The Daily Mail reports that 11 competitors took place in the competition, which was won by Mr Hunt for the third time.

He said: "This year has been the hardest without a doubt.

"It felt like everyone was on top of their game and you had to be diving really well to win it.

"Waiting for the final score was one of the most nerve-wracking times of my life."
