A mother-of-two fears she may never walk again after falling 10ft down a concrete hole when she was on holiday in Mexico.

Marie Honey, 48, was enjoying the last day of a holiday in Mexico following her niece's wedding last year when she walked over the hole, which had been covered by a piece of wood which had been painted green.

Mrs Honey, who is a nurse from Ormskirk, Lancashire, fractured her spine in three places, damaged her coccyx, was knocked unconscious and suffered cuts and bruises as a result of the accident.

The Daily Mail reports that she spent three nights in a Mexican hospital, before being flown home in a fully reclined position.

She had to wear a back brace for three months and has had surgery on her back. Almost a year later, she still needs crutches and worries that she will never be able to walk properly.

Marie told the Daily Mail: "We had all been so excited for our holiday in Mexico and to see my niece Kerrie get married.

"It was beautiful and the wedding day was perfect but the memories have been ruined forever by what happened on my last day out there.

"I didn't even notice the hole cover because it was painted green presumably to be concealed within the grass and it gave way before I even realised what I was standing on."

Marie says that when she came round she was screaming in agony - but had to climb out of the hole using a ladder that hotel staff lowered down.

To date, the tour operator, TUI UK Ltd, have not admitted liability, but the hotel has since ensured that the area is safe.

Mrs Honey's lawyer Joseph Dawson, who is a specialist in accidents abroad at Irwin Mitchell, said:

"This is a horrendous case that has left a woman who was dedicated to her profession and caring for others, unable to work and virtually housebound.

"The terrible injuries she sustained are likely to affect her life forever."
