If you love nothing better than hitting the road on two wheels and discovering Britain's beautiful scenery by bike, feast your eyes on this top cycle spot in Scotland...

The hilly and rural region of Scottish Borders in the south of Scotland is the place to go right now, with cycling greats Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish heading to the region for the Scottish stage of the Tour of Britain.

With quiet country roads, world-class mountain biking facilities and magnificent colours when autumn sets in, the Scottish Borders has plenty to offer cycling fanatics including the fantastic Cyclists Welcome Scheme, where you can find cafes that refill your water bottles and dry your gloves on their radiators! The scheme also means you can find the right accommodation as a rider, with eating times to fit around your cycling schedule - cool, eh?

If the 161.4km route in the Tour of Britain's Scottish stage is a bit much for you and you'd prefer a less strenuous trail in the area, why not try one of the 40 road cycle routes around the Scottish Borders that pass through pretty valleys, rolling hills and beautiful forests so you can stay fit and get to see the attractions of your choice?

You might be cycling as a family too and there are gentle routes where you can explore the region on quiet roads and take in ruined abbeys and stately homes along the way - the perfect chance for the kids to learn about the local attractions along the way!

The renowned 4 Abbeys cycle route (55 miles) covers the lovely Melrose, Kelso, Jedburgh and Dryburgh Abbeys, while the Megget and Talla road cycle route (53 miles) passes Traquair House and Dawyck Botanic Gardens with amazing views of Broad Law, the highest hill in the Borders.

More adventurous cyclists will love the 7Stanes centres, where some of the world's best mountain bike trails can be found, such as the rocky granite trails of Dalbeattie and the long forest-based ride Glentrool, which is ideal for beginners.

You don't have to travel with your own bike either, as there are loads of cycle hire shops, plus places for repair and maintenance in the Scottish Borders.
