Two people were killed yesterday afternoon when a car competing in the Var Rally in southern France, crashed into a crowd.

The Daily Mail reports that 17 others were injured, including several children, at the crash in Plan-de-la-Tour, near Toulon on the Mediterranean coast.

The accident happened when a car competing in the 14th annual Maures regional rally veered off the road. It seems that the driver made a mistake at an intersection where cars were supposed to turn right and instead drove straight ahead, towards spectators.

A witness said: "It crashed into a first row of spectators before peeling off and mowing down other people."

The rally is not a major road race in France, but the challenge is for drivers to navigate narrow roads through rural areas at high speeds.

Fire stations deployed about 50 rescue workers to the crash site and some of the injured were rushed to hospital. One of the dead was reported to be a rally marshall.
