Russian theme park ride has an unexpected twist

Just watching this theme park ride (above) at Divo Ostrov amusement park in St Petersburg, Russia, is a stomach-churning experience - and one that will add fuel to the growing debate that theme park rides are going too far to produce that "thrill".

It's all the more scary when you consider that the amusement park has a rather disconcerting safety record.

Russia Today reports that, in 2010, ten riders on a rocket attraction at the same park were left dangling from a single thread more than 200ft in the air when a cable snapped. See the video below.

And in 2008, a 12-year old girl was seriously injured on a ride at the park in an accident also involving a broken cable.

Of course, you don't have to go as far as Russia to hear of terrifying theme park accidents. Last Last May, a man who was left badly injured after he was "catapulted" from a water ride at Wicksteed Park in Northamptonshire. And in the summer, a 12-year old boy fell out of a white knuckle ride at Camelot Theme Park in Chorley, Lancashire, leaving him badly injured.

And this year, a new ride at Alton Towers, Nemesis sub-Terra, has been deemed so scary that children have been banned from it because of its "intense and disturbing effects".
