The words "best" and "airline food" don't often find themselves in the same sentence - but it's not all cold baked beans and rubbery egg these days, apparently.
A panel of international travellers has declared the best on board food is served by Turkish Airlines, following a survey carried out by, Skyscanner.
The flight comparison site included 19 international airlines from all corners of the world in the study and ranked them according to the scores they received from passengers. More than 100 passengers from around the world were asked to score the airline food on presentation and taste.
Turkish Airlines took first place with a score of 86% for its menu, which includes tasty dishes like stuffed eggplant and walnut pear tart. As well as standard meals, the airline also offers a range of special meals including children's, Kosher, vegetarian and seafood options.
In second place is Singapore Airlines, on which Gordon Ramsay has previously offered his culinary expertise, while Etihad took third place ahead of UAE rival Emirates which came in 5th behind Ireland's Aer Lingus.
Mary Porter, Skyscanner's food expert and one half of pop up restaurant Kitchen Porter's, told Aol Travel: "The stereotype of the barely edible inflight meal appears to be a thing of the past. In today's highly competitive marketplace airlines have to stand out from one and another, ensure the passengers' on board experience is a positive one and ultimately generate customer loyalty.
British Airways, who ranked 14th in the list of 19, has employed such a tactic - by getting Heston Blumenthal to design an Olympic-themed in-flight menu, which will be served to three million passengers during the Games.
According to The Sun, Heston has been mentoring rising star chef Simon Hulstone as part of BA's Great Britons programme. They have created dishes inspired by the airline's menus in 1948 – the last time the Games were held in London.
Highlights include potted braised beef with a potato and horseradish topping, served with hispi cabbage, baby carrots, roasted shallots and a rich jus, and a fish pie using sustainable sourced hake, dressed with parmesan pomme puree and a warm tartare sauce, all complemented by cheesecake desserts.
BA are bringing the flying experience to the public with the "Flight BA2012" pop-up venue, which will also celebrate British talent. The art gallery, cinema and dining lounge will showcase the works of the BA Great Britons who were mentored by Richard E Grant, Tracey Emin and Heston Blumenthal, according to Travel Bite.
