A British angler has been fatally electrocuted while fishing at a lake in Spain.

The Daily Mail reports that Andrew Latham died instantly when his fishing line hit an overhead cable at the Amadorio dam, a popular fishing spot near the town of Villajoyosa, near Benidorm.

The dam is a popular for carp fishing, and is also a good place to catch trout, barrel and black bass.

A fellow angler called am ambulance, but paramedics were unable to revive the 44-year-old.

A spokesman for Spanish police said: "We are treating this as an accident.

"It appears the victim's fishing line hit a power cable as he lifted it above his head after catching a fish."

It is not known if Mr Latham lived in Spain or was on holiday.
