A flight attendant had to be restrained by passengers and crew on an American Airlines flight after she started ranting that the plane was going to crash over the PA system.

According to news.com.au, she told passengers on the flight from Dallas to Chicago: "We are not taking off. We're having technical difficulties. We are heading back to the gate."

First class travellers helped cabin crew subdue the woman after she started screaming things like, "I am not responsible for crashing this plane", talking about 9/11, and rambling about American Airlines' bankruptcy.

According to the Daily Mail, it took five people to restrain the flight attendant, and one passenger described how she had to be "thrown into the first row of seats and held down", and that she sounded "demonic".

Passenger Greg Lozano (pictured) said: "We were pretty frightened. I was glad we weren't in the air."

The Dallas Observer reported that policemen removed the woman "kicking and screaming" from the plane after the incident.

The plane was delayed for 90 minutes, but took off successfully after the woman had been removed.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro said there was "an altercation on board the plane and that's why it returned to the gate and police were called."

The airline told the Daily Mail: "We commend our other crew members for their assistance in quickly getting the aircraft back to the gate so that customers could be re-accommodated.

"We apologise for any inconvenience to our customers and we appreciate their patience and understanding."
