The Virgin Atlantic airline are recruiting 500 new cabin crew staff as part of its expansion for 2012.

The jobs will be based at London's Heathrow and Gatwick, and will be for Virgin's new routes to Cancun and Vancouver, as well as other long-haul destinations like New York, Barbados, Las Vegas, and Shanghai, according to the BBC.

The airline is also set to purchase seven new A330-300 aircraft later in the year.

Corneel Koster, director of operations, safety and security for Virgin Atlantic, told Travel Mole: "It is an exciting year of growth and investment for Virgin Atlantic as we look forward to expanding our network and welcoming a new fleet of aircraft."

The news will be welcome to many as new figures from the Office of National Statistic show unemployment rates rose by 48,000 in the last three months of 2011.
