Air New Zealand has been named the best airline in the world by a top global industry magazine.

Air Transport World, which has been running for 40 years and is based in America, described the airline as a 'trendsetter in a number of areas, including product motivation and social media, and praised it for its staff motivation," according to nzherald.co.nz.

Praise was also heaped upon the airline for its efforts in helping communities in Christchurch after its devastating earthquakes last year.

It's the second time the airline has been honoured with the award, and chief executive Rob Fyfe said: "Winning ATW Airline of the Year in 2010 was, in my view, one of the greatest accolades that had ever been bestowed on Air New Zealand - in our industry it's equivalent to winning an Oscar. To pick up the award again this year is simply outstanding."

Rob will pick up the award at a ceremony in Singapore on 13 February.

Dubai-based carrier Emirates picked up the award last year, while Korean airline Asiana won in 2009.
