£3m cable cars to boost tourism in Welsh village

Plans for a new £3m cable car system to boost tourism are under way in Wrexham, Wales.

Proposals are set to be submitted by the Plas Kynaston Canal Group (PKCG), who want to reinstate the filled-in canal to attract visitors.

The village of Cefn Mawr has suffered with a loss of industry in recent years, and the move would boost the local economy, said the group.

If the canal was reinstated it could link up to inland waterways like the popular Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which has Unesco World Heritage status and attracts around 200,000 visitors a year.

The first phase of the plan would include the contraction of a 60-berth marina in Cefn Mawr and a tourist information centre.

The second would be the construction of a cable car system to transport people from the information centre into Cefn Mawr, and allow them to enjoy the views over Llangollen.

David Taylor, chair of the PKCG, told the BBC: "We have to think how we can bring an economy into the area.

The World Heritage people claim 200,000 people are currently visiting the aqueduct.
"With the canal and a marina, and putting in a cable car system, we can bring visitors directly from the car park - which would be the old Flexsys [industry] site - right into the village by cable car."
