Happy Feet! Penguin gets designer shoe to stop him limping

Updated

A baby zoo penguin born with a limp has had a special shoe made for him to help him walk.

Zookeepers at Santa Barbara Zoo, California, discovered that the Humboldt penguin, named Lucky, was born with bones that weren't growing properly. This caused a severe limp and a threat to his health because of the risk of infection.

His thoughtful carers decided to create a special shoe to protect his foot and stop him limping, and joined forces with footwear company Teva to design a tailor-made waterproof sandal.

So what does Lucky make of his new footwear? His keepers say he's much happier, and can now be found swimming and diving with his friends. Looks like he is well on the way to living up to his name.
