ZSL Whipsnade Zoo's resident artist has been busy putting the finishing touches to her latest masterpieces, which will go on display for Elephant Appreciation Day this weekend.

Karishma, a 13-year old female Asian elephant, has turned out to be quite the talented painter, and, when she isn't being mum to her 17-month-old baby George, loves to relax by putting paintbrush to paper.

Elephant keeper Elizabeth Becker says: 'Karishma really enjoys painting, and it demonstrates just how dexterous elephants' trunks really are. Whilst her paintings may not be as detailed as a Da Vinci, we think the finished products are pretty amazing!'

Karishma's handiwork - or should we say trunk-talent - will be on display at the zoo for the duration of Elephant Appreciation Day.

Hosted by ZSL Whipsnade Zoo to raise money for its worldwide elephant conservation projects, the celebrations will be held over Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September.

During the weekend, visitors who make a donation will be given a guided tour of the elephants' enclosure and can have their photograph taken with one of the animals. There will also be demonstrations and face painting among other activities.
