Holiday coach causes nine-car pile-up in 'too narrow' street

A holiday coach has caused a nine-car pile-up after squeezing itself down a street that was too narrow to accommodate it.

Horrified residents of the road in Worthing, West Sussex, rushed out of their houses when they heard a series of crunches as vehicles got written off.

Builder Craig Worsfold watched as his Astra van was crushed, and residents estimate the damage caused to be around £100,000.

He told The Sun: 'The coach was swerving and bashing everything in its path.

'It looked like he didn't even have time to brake. One car spun in front and he was pushing that along into all the other cars. It all seemed to happen in slow motion.'

The unnamed driver had just received a parking ticket and is thought to have been in a rush to find a parking space.

Primary school teacher Rebecca McLauglan, 26, whose Corsa was demolished, said: 'We heard he was trying to get to the seafront.'

In total, half the cars in the street - many of them almost new - were wrecked.

Locals in Downview Road told how the mortified driver locked himself in the coach and sat with his head in his hands until paramedics arrived ten minutes later.

Owners of the coach, Nottingham-based Trevor Bailey Travel, have launched their own investigation into the incident.
