City breaks for Brits cheaper as pound rises

Updated

Planning a spring weekend getaway? Now Brits can get more for their money at popular destinations like Paris and New York.

The Post Office's annual survey of city costs, which compares the total paid out for 11 typical holiday buys - including accommodation, transport, sightseeing, food and drink - in 19 destinations has revealed better value for British travellers.

According to the Telegraph, the total cost of items compared with this time a year ago has fallen by an eighth in Dublin and Budapest, by 10% in Rome, and 6% in Rome, with Brits also getting better value in Paris, Copenhagen and New York this year.

Sarah Munro, the Post Office's head of travel money, said a strengthening in the value of the pound during the past 12 months had contributed to this.

Sterling has risen by more than 8% against the dollar since last year, by more than 5% against the Hungarian forint and the Polish zloty, and by 2% against the euro.

So where's the cheapest place to go for a city break? Riga came out on top, with the typical 11 holiday purhcases costing an average of £114.92, Prague was second with £134.79, while Budapest and Tallinn came in fourth and fifth.

Dublin, being previously criticised for its high prices, took seventh place, making it a good choice this year for a weekend break, while Stockholm was the most expensive coming in at £313.64 for a weekend getaway.

A weekend jaunt to Paris is likely to set you back £253.74, while a New York getaway came in at £305.97.
