Snakes on a train: Panic as 3.5ft snake escapes its travel box

Passengers on a train in Poland got the fright of their lives when a massive 3.5ft yellow snake escaped its travel compartment and started slithering through the carriage.

The commuters travelling between Gdynia and Zakopane immediately grabbed the emergency brake and climbed up on their seats as the reptile crossed their paths.

The train was brought to a halt at Llawskie station, where passengers fled the scene and police and firemen boarded to remove the animal.

Police spokesman Slawomir Nojman said: 'Police and animal welfare officers arrived at the scene, and after about an hour, the snake was caught.'

On further inspection, police found another snake in the carriage - but this one was safely tucked up in its travel box.

The reptiles were meant to be delivered to an address in Nowy Sacz, but have been taken to a local veterinary practice.

And, animal-lovers needn't worry - the police spokesman added: 'Both snakes were unharmed and we are looking into the whole affair.'
