Five of the best: Dominican adventures

Updated:

If you're looking for something different for your next holiday and have a penchant for an adrenaline buzz or two, try this. Dominica's landscape of rugged mountains, rainforests and rolling rivers makes it an ideal active-adventure destination.

Here's our top five exciting activities to get the adrenaline pumping...

1 Jump over cascades into crystal-clear pools, wade, swim, climb or rappel through waterfalls – just book an Extreme Dominica Canyoning Tour. Catering to all levels of experience, the trip costs £95 per person and includes guides, transport, gear, rappel training and a well-earned lunch.

2 For the best rainforest views, take it to the top on a Zip Line Canopy Adventure (pictured above), which will put you through 27 challenges on suspended platforms, footbridges a Tarzan Jump and seven zip lines. The final leg will whizz you 40 feet above the river Layou. It costs £45 per person, including safety training and equipment.

3 Fancy spinning and swirling for 90 minutes down the Pagua River – one of Dominica's longest – until you reach the Atlantic? Then Tubing the Pagua River is just the ticket. It costs just £19 per person and includes transport to the launch site and equipment.

4 The first long-distance hiking trail in the Caribbean – the Waitukubuli National Trail – is due to be completed by December 2011 and will stretch north to south for 115 miles. It's estimated that the 14 sections will take two weeks to complete. However, keen hikers should get their walking boots on now because some sections of the trail are already open.

5 If you prefer your thrills in the safety of a vehicle, then the 4-Wheel Drive Rainforest and Waterfall Adventure could be for you. Starting in the island's capital, Roseau, where you'll visit the Botanical Gardens, then it's off into the mountains to the Wotten Waven sulphur springs, into the rainforest to marvel at the TI Tou Gorge, where you can cool off in the natural rock plunge pool.
