Tory MP shares appalling homophobic message she received after coming out as bisexual

A Conservative MP has shared homophobic abuse she received after coming out as bisexual.

Dehenna Davison, Conservative MP for Bishop Auckland, tweeted a screenshot of what appeared to be an email message that labelled her as "not normal" and called for her deselection.

"If you are so deluded to think bisexual, homosexual, trans etc is normal you are NOT someone to represent us in Parliament," the message read.

"I hate to think of all the hate crime pro queer laws you would want. You have to be deselected."

Davison tweeted alongside the screenshot: "Someone clearly needs more rainbows in their life."

In an interview with GB News due to be aired on Monday, Davison admitted she was in the process of divorcing her husband and was in a relationship, adding: "It's going really well, and I'm very excited about it.

"But we'll see, the future is a very exciting place."

She added: "If anyone were to explicitly ask me, I certainly wouldn't try and hide it because I don't think it's anything to be ashamed of.

"The reason I haven't done a kind of, 'By the way, guys', is because I don't want being bi to be considered a big deal.

"If I did a very public kind of coming out parade, that would be me saying there's something really unusual about this and trying to make a big deal of it when to me it's not.

"It's just part of who I am."

The pre-recorded interview was trailed in The Telegraph and Davison said the overwhelming reaction to her news had been positive.

Tweeting on Sunday evening, she said: "Really overwhelmed by the outpouring of love this evening. Thank you so much for your support."

Davison received further support after sharing the offensive message.

Dean Leake wrote: "I don’t share your politics but I applaud you for speaking out about your sexuality and being so open…it’s 2021! It shouldn’t be controversial for any MP of any party to be LGBTQ+."

Helena Horton said: "Thank you for being a role model, I wish when I was a teenager there'd been a cool young MP who was proudly telling the Telegraph she was bisexual. There are much more people who admire you for doing it than there are haters."

And Twitter user Ed McGuinness simply wrote: "Why do most haters have terrible spelling?"
