'That's a wrap': 'Neighbours' stops shooting after 37 years

Neighbours has finished filming after 37 years, marking the day by sharing a final cast photo with the words: "That's a wrap."

The Australian drama - which launched the careers of big stars like Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan - was axed earlier this year, after UK broadcaster Channel 5 decided that it was dropping the show from its schedule.

The shot shared on Twitter showed the cast on set, with actors Jackie Woodburne (Susan Kennedy) and Tom Oliver (Lou Carpenter) holding the final clapperboard.

Actor Stefan Dennis – who starred as the villainous Paul Robinson – said he was “incredibly emotional” as he shot his last ever scenes on Ramsay Street.

Speaking on the Australian breakfast programme Studio 10, he said: “It’s a melancholy day for me.

“I sort of closed the studio door behind me on my very last scene, my very last dialogue scene and… I suddenly surprised myself by getting incredibly emotional.

“I just kept to myself and went to my dressing room… so I’m keeping a very low profile today. I think I’ll just be an absolute mess if I sort of hang around too long.”

Dennis, who posted a picture on Instagram of him going on set for the last time, shared that Princess Diana and the Queen Mother had both been big fans of Neighbours, which started in 1985.

He said the royals would specifically request tapes from the BBC in order to catch up on episodes missed during royal engagements.

While the soap has finished shooting, the last episode will air later this summer.

As it comes to an end, favourites from over the years return to Erinsborough, including Minogue and Donovan, who starred as power couple Charlene Mitchell and Scott Robinson in the 80s.

Peter O’Brien, who played Shane Ramsay, and Ian Smith, who played Harold Bishop, will also be back.

Mark Little, who played Joe Mangel, and Paul Keane, who played Des Clarke, are also set to put in an appearance.

It was announced in March that Neighbours was ending, with the soap tweeting: "We are so sorry to say that after nearly 37 years and almost 9000 episodes broadcast we have to confirm that Neighbours will cease production in June."

The final episode is due to be broadcast on 1 August.
