Terrier Mix Puppy Abandoned in a Port-A-Potty Is Thriving In His Foster Home

Last week an employee of the City Of Fort Wayne, Indiana, found a tiny terrier mix puppy abandoned and starving in a port-a-potty.

The eight-week-old male puppy have been cared for by The Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control.

The Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control posted on Facebook, in part, "This sweet boy was malnourished with his rib cage and spine showing, had urine-stained paws and overgrown nails, and was quite scared. Our medical team examined his overall health, and the main concern was getting him to a healthy weight. A slow feeding plan was created in order to not disrupt his digestive system. In the meantime, our staff members provided him with the gentle love and care he deserves. This precious boy has been a little wiggly angel despite being failed by the person that was supposed to care for him. Once his excitement for you calms down, he loves curling up in your warm lap. What a testament to how forgiving animals can be."

The shelter then went on to explain that the puppy left this morning to go to his loving foster home where he can gain weight and be a happy puppy surrounded by loving humans and foster dog siblings to learn from. We will post an update next week on how he is doing in his foster home. We aren’t sure when he will be available for adoption, but we will keep you all updated on his journey.

What To Do If You Find a Stray Dog

You first have to take the dog to your veterinarian to see if they have a micro-chip and to make sure the dog isn't in any type of medical distress. If they do have a microchip, you have to contact the owner of the dog and see if the dog is lost or abandoned.

I know that it's tempting just to keep the pup, especially if you believe it's been homeless for a while, but if you were in this situation and your dog was lost you'd want someone to return the pup to you!

If the dog isn't microchipped, you can search social media site and call your local animal shelters to see if anyone is looking for the dog. If you can't locate the owner, you should bring the dog to your veterinarian to get him checked out and to receive any shots he needs, plus to get him microchipped so if he gets lost again you will be contacted.

Just like any pet you add to your family, you should keep the new dog separate from any other animals in the home until they have time to get used to each other, make introductions slowly, and make sure all animals have a quiet place to retreat to.

Adding another pet is such a wonderful experience for any family, and it's just magical when a stray pet finds you.

The Fort Wayne Animal Care and Controls asks that anyone  compelled to help neglected animals just like this puppy, donates today to their Angel Fund on their website.
