Sweet Friendship Between Octopus and Pufferfish Is Touching People’s Hearts

Friendship is an important part of life, and some animals also create bonds similar to how humans do. The best friendships are always those formed by two people so different from each other that it's hard to believe they are friends. Jules Casey is an Australian freediver, scuba diver, and an award-winning photographer. While on a recent dive, she recorded the unlikely friendship between an octopus and pufferfish and told us all their story.

Jules shared the video on Sunday, May 5th. It shows an octopus approaching the pufferfish who was in his home. Jules goes on to tell the story of how the pufferfish outgrew his home and needed to find a new one. The octopus of course helps and finds the perfect place, complete with the best ocean views. Makes sure your sound is on so you can hear Jules' story!

This was so sweet to watch! The two really do seem to be friends, although most of the time intelligent octopus and prickly pufferfish have a prey/predator relationship. Jules' fans adored the video as much as I did. @dronesey wondered, "When does the children's book come out?" @graygart made me laugh with, "SpongeBob's Realtor as well." And I couldn't agree more with @lannaa.bee who said, "In the best way possible, that’s enough internet for today. Nothing will be better than this reel!"

Interesting Octopus Facts

We all know that octopuses have eight arms, but did you know that they also have nine brains and three hearts as well? That's just one of the things that I've learned about these beautiful creatures since I started writing about them. Known for their intelligence, octopuses are shy and (usually) friendly towards humans; they really want nothing more than to be left alone.

While they try to stay away from humans, sometimes they do have encounters with them. The strong suckers on their arms can be dangerous if they lock onto a human since the suckers are hard to remove. That didn't stop this woman from allowing this octopus to give her a hug, though! Octopuses also have strong beaks that they could bite a human with. With the exception of the blue-ringed octopus all octopus bite with their large beaks and inject venom, but the venom is not fatal. Only the blue-ringed octopus could kill a human with one of its venomous bites.

And here's a cool fact from Smithsonian Magazine, "To survive in the deep ocean, octopuses’ blood is powered by a copper-containing protein called hemocyanin, instead of the more common, iron-based hemoglobin in human blood. Whereas our iron-rich blood is red when it meets oxygen, the copper in octopus blood makes it appear blue."

Octopuses are one of the most intelligent creatures of the deep blue sea! I scuba dive occasionally and I've always wanted to see one. They are the chameleons of the ocean, so it's totally possible I've encountered one and just missed it completely! Nevertheless, it's still on my bucket list to see one in the wild someday though.
