Stunning Black Cockatoo Shows Off His 'Big Wings' Trick

Until you spend more time with animals, it's hard to see just how intelligent they can be. True--our furry friends don't think or act in quite the same ways people do, but pets pick up on more than many people realize. Just look at this smart black Cockatoo, for example!

This bird named Puppy is as beautiful as can be, and I think he knows it, too. He loves to show off his 'big wings' when performing his favorite trick, but he also expects a treat every time he does it. What a clever fellow! Check out his charming April 6 TikTok video of--you guessed it--Puppy's iconic trick. It's just too cute to miss!

OMG--look at him! Puppy has got to be one of the most stunning pet birds I've ever seen. In fact, I'm not sure that I've ever seen a black Cockatoo before, and I know I'm not the only one.

Most of the Cockatoos I've seen are white-colored or even pink, but these darker-feathered populations aren't especially rare. Even so, black birds are less commonly seen, especially in pet shops. This could have something to do with the bad omens black-colored animals have seemed to bring throughout history, or due to the lower popularity of black pets. Even black cats and shelter dogs with black fur have trouble getting adopted!

Black Cockatoos like Puppy are from a few different parrot species that are all native to Australia. Fortunately, the red-tailed black Cockatoo is not endangered or threatened, but many related species are beginning to face serious threats in the wild. While many parrot species, including Cockatoos, make popular pet birds, this does not cancel out any outside factors, including deforestation and loss of habitat.

How to Train a Cockatoo

It's worth noting that most birds are not beginner's pets. They require regular cleaning, feeding, watering, and enrichment in order to live their best lives, so new bird owners need to do a lot of research before committing.

Once you're caring for your bird--you're already beginning to bond! Even the smallest interactions can help you and your pet Cockatoo build a closer relationship, and before long, you can start training.

Positive reinforcement is always the best method to use when teaching pets new skills--including birds. This will ensure your buddy stays calm and collected while listening to your instructions, and you can use bird treats or birdseed to encourage the wanted behaviors. Just ask Puppy: birds can get the hang of just about anything with enough consistency and time!
