NFL will reportedly expand international games to Germany, will reveal finalist cities Tuesday

The NFL is hoping to add another country to its schedule as early as 2022. The league is reportedly expanding international play to Germany, and will reveal a list of three finalist cities Tuesday, according to NFL Network.

The NFL has flirted with the idea of playing games in Germany for years, and will finally get its wish.

The league is reportedly hoping to play a game in Germany in 2022, though that's not finalized yet. NFL Network did not hint at which cities in Germany will be considered to host the game.

NFL expanding games outside the United States

The league made an effort to expand internationally over the past couple seasons. The NFL started playing games in London during the 2007 season. The experiment started with one game per season, but has expanded in recent years.

The Atlanta Falcons and New York Jets will play the first London game on the 2021 NFL schedule Sunday. The Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins will play in London in Week 6.

In addition to London, the NFL has played games in Mexico City since 2016. Prior to 2020, the league had played at least one international game every season since 2007. The league did not play any games outside the United States in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
