MLB betting: New York, New York has been a great bet as Yankees and Mets on a roll

On Tuesday night, the New York Mets rolled to a 4-2 win over the Washington Nationals. The New York Yankees had more suspense, but beat the Toronto Blue Jays on an Aaron Judge walk-off home run.

We're a little more than a month into the season, and it has become common to see both New York teams win. The Yankees and Mets are in first place of their divisions and have the first- and third-best records in MLB, respectively. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers, another high-profile team, break into the top three.

Betting became legal in New York in January, so this is the first season in which bettors can legally wager on the Yankees and Mets within the state. Good timing.

Yankees, Mets in first place

Mets and Yankees fans who like betting on their team have had a great few weeks.

The Mets are 21-10 and already have a seven-game lead in the NL East. The Yankees are 21-8 and up four games in the AL East. That success has translated to betting wins too.

In Covers.com's standings that track how much money a team has won or lost for bettors over the season, the Mets have made the second-most money behind the surprising Arizona Diamondbacks. They've won $662 for a bettor who has placed $100 on them every game. The Yankees, despite being a favorite in most games, have a $428 profit for that $100 bettor. That's fourth-best in MLB.

Both teams came into the season with high expectations. The Yankees were expected to be one of the best teams in baseball because they're the Yankees. The Mets went on a spending spree, adding Max Scherzer and Starling Marte among others. That elevated them. Both teams are often favored to win, and they keep cashing tickets.

It's not that crazy to start wondering if we might get another Subway Series in October.

New York teams among World Series favorites

The Dodgers are still the favorite to win it all at BetMGM. Their World Series odds are +500.

There are three teams behind the Dodgers at +800 and two of them are from New York. The Yankees, Mets and Toronto Blue Jays are all next in line. All others are +1000 and longer.

The Mets are an interesting case because they are 21-10 without the best pitcher (when healthy) in baseball. If Jacob deGrom comes back and stays healthy through October, without having lost anything from having a stress reaction on his right shoulder blade, the Mets will be even better.

The Yankees are a good all-around team. Their team ERA is second in MLB. Their OPS on offense is fourth. And it's the Yankees; they'll be adding at the trade deadline.

The Dodgers are formidable and there are other teams in each league playing well. But the story of the early MLB season — perhaps other than the dead ball suppressing home runs — is the early dominance of the New York teams.

If that continues into the summer, you're going to hear way too much about it. But at least bettors could profit off it.
